SUMMARY:Artificial Empathy? – Gabriel Stille
DESCRIPTION:Right now we live through a breakthrough of Artificial Intelligence. New applications are popping up all the time, and chatbots are increasingly performing the roles of buddies, coaches, therapists or romantic partners. Applications trained on previous input can react to human emotional expressions, and in turn, express a response – a kind of artificial empathy.\nOn a historical note, some practices of humanistic psychology have from the very beginning been accused of being “robotic” – in repeatedly offering reflections essentially just repeating what is said. One of the very first chatbots, developed in the 1960s, was modelled to reply like a humanistic therapist. In NVC circles, there is also a discussion on how the “mechanic” application of the 4 steps with the lists of feelings and needs works, in comparison to a grounded and lived-in focus on resonance, embodiment and connection.\nThe session starts with a presentation offering a view of the topic and then moves into a space for reflection and discussion on what empathy is in our respective understanding, if or when artificial empathy is useful, and how to react to AI applications in our fields. It is possible to just follow the session, but participants are warmly invited to share their own impressions, opinions and experiences.\n \n[Workshop organised in the frame of Time for Empathy 2024]\n\nWhen: 5 March 2024, 14:45-16:15 CET (Berlin time)\nHow: ONLINE on ZOOM\nRecording:\nMost of the workshops during “Time for Empathy” are not recorded, so the only possibility to participate is to join the session. The sessions that will be recorded, we will make available to others if the quality is satisfying. We may also use parts of the recording for marketing and publicity across various media. If you do not wish to be recorded, switch off your camera and microphone for the whole duration of the session.\nLanguage: English\nCost: FREE\nRegistration: \nTo take part in this workshop, register for the “Time for Empathy” event here: https://www.empathiceurope.com/time-for-empathy/\nNOTE: Register only ONCE for the whole event and receive access to all “Time for Empathy” workshops organised between 3 and 10 March 2024.\n\nAbout the trainer:\nGabriel Stille\nGabriel Stille works in the teaching and communications fields and offers workshops and courses based on six years of learning Nonviolent Communication (NVC). He also holds a master’s degree in the History of Ideas from Lund University.\nLearn more about Gabriel and his workshops: https://linktr.ee/gabrielstille\n
