Safe brain – practice session
„The brain is a social organ, and its function is to help us
understand others and to be understood by others.”
Matthew D. Lieberman, “Social. Why our brains are wired to connect”
– Are you struggling with high stress levels and would like to learn ready-to-adapt practices supporting your emotional regulation?
– Do you recognise some challenges while relating with others, especially when they are from a group you are not familiar with, such as a different generation, country, or department?
– Are you feeling some resentment towards someone and would like to learn how to connect despite it?
Matthew D. Lieberman, a social psychologist and neuroscientist known for his work on social cognitive neuroscience, highlights that the safe social connections we have at work are very important for our nervous systems. When we feel safe we are healthier, cooperate better, have more motivation and exert innovative behaviours.
Together with his wife Naomi Eisenberger, they found out that for our brains the lack of belonging is perceived almost the same as the physical pain. That is why we may feel the tension and high stress levels in our bodies whenever we interpret different situations at work, such as giving feedback, making mistakes or conflicts, as threats to being part of the group. Not even mentioning exclusion or other forms of violence.
Inspired by their work and the work of Sarah Peyton, Daniel Siegel, Paul Gilbert and Marshall Rosenberg, I would like to share with you:
– easy to adapt practices of taking care of ourselves while facing stressful situations and strong emotions in our workplaces,
– a process called “Enemy Image” based on NVC that helps us connect with those towards whom we hold some resentment or bias.
What is a practice session?
A practice session is an online workshop where you can take a situation from your workplace and try to use Nonviolent Communication with the support of Paulina and other participants.
As it is a safe environment, you can make mistakes, try out different scenarios and have fun – thanks to that you will be better prepared to face similar situations in real life.
